Random Pokemon Generator

Need a quick way to pick a random Pokemon? This free random Pokemon generator draws one creature from every generation, all the way from Bulbasaur in Kanto to Pecharunt in Paldea. You can let it choose from the full list, or narrow things down first by generation, by type, or by whether you only want fully evolved Pokemon. There is no signup, no download, and no limit on how many times you use it. Everything runs inside your browser, so it works on a phone just as easily as on a desktop, even if your connection is spotty. Use it to build a surprise team, run a challenge, settle a debate with friends, or just see who shows up next.

Three steps

How It Works

  1. Press the button

Click the “Pick a Random Pokemon” button and your result appears in the card above, with its name, National Pokedex number, and one or two color-coded type badges.

  2. Narrow the pool

Use the Generation, Type, and Evolution filters to decide who is eligible. The line under the button always shows how many Pokemon are still in the pool.

  3. Press again for a new one

Each press draws a fresh Pokemon from the filtered pool, and the generator never gives you the same one twice in a row, so you can keep picking.

Field notes

Generations, Types, and Final Evolutions

Pick a Critter draws from the complete National Pokedex, not just a handful of popular faces. Every species from Generation 1 through Generation 9 is in the pool, more than a thousand in all, from the original Kanto starters to the newest arrivals in Paldea. Each pick shows the exact English name, the National Pokedex number, and the typing, so you always know who you rolled. Older generations hold the creatures many people grew up with, while newer ones add fresh faces, alternate forms, and regional surprises. Whatever era you love best, it has the same chance of turning up on the next press.

Types make each pick feel like a real choice instead of a coin flip. Choose Water if your team needs a surfer, Grass for something leafy, or Dragon if you are feeling greedy, and the generator hands back only Pokemon carrying that typing. Dual-typed Pokemon count toward either of their types, so Gyarados satisfies both Water and Flying filters. Pair the type filter with a generation filter and results get specific fast, like a Psychic-type from Hoenn. Change either filter and the very next press picks from the new pool.

The evolution filter is about how far along each Pokemon has come in its evolution line. Most species start small and change as they grow: Charmander becomes Charmeleon, then Charizard. With the filter off, every stage is in play, babies and middle forms included. With final evolution only switched on, you get the finished forms, plus single-stage Pokemon that never evolve at all. That makes it easy to draw a team that is ready to battle without re-rolling past anything underpowered.

Random picks turn out to be surprisingly practical. Players use them to choose a starter for a replay, roll a surprise team for a challenge, or see who gets the advantage in a friendly battle. Groups of friends use it as a coin toss with personality: everyone runs the same filters and compares what came up. It works just as well for lighter tasks, like naming a pet, picking a character for a drawing, or breaking a tie in a group chat. Because no result repeats twice in a row, you can keep pressing the button for as long as the conversation needs.

There is nothing to set up before you start. The counter under the button always shows how many Pokemon are still eligible, so you know your odds before you press. Everything happens on your device, and your picks are never sent anywhere, which is why there is nothing to sign up for and no reason to hold back. Use it a hundred times in a row or just once between rounds of something else. It is a small tool doing one job, and it tries to do that job quickly.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this random Pokemon generator free?

Yes, completely free. There is no signup, no download, no ads, and no limit on how many times you can pick. Open the page and start generating whenever you like.

How many Pokemon are in the generator?

Every Pokemon from Generation 1 through Generation 9, more than 1,000 species in all, from Bulbasaur to Pecharunt.

Can I filter by type or generation?

Yes. There are three filters: Generation, Type, and Evolution. They work together, so you can ask for something as specific as a final-form Dragon-type from Generation 5.

What does "final evolution only" mean?

It means the generator only picks Pokemon that are fully evolved, the last stage of their evolution line. For example, you would get Charizard instead of Charmander or Charmeleon.

Can I use this to pick a random Pokemon for a challenge run?

Absolutely. It is an easy way to roll a random team, set challenge rules, or see who your starter is on a replay. Turn on final evolution only if you want everyone battle-ready.

Does it include shiny Pokemon?

No. This generator produces standard-form Pokemon only, so shiny appearances are not part of it. Every pick shows the species name, number, and typing.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in any modern browser and works on phones, tablets, and desktops. Once the page has loaded, it even works offline.

Is this an official Pokemon website?

No. Pick a Critter is an unofficial fan-made tool, not affiliated with Nintendo, Game Freak, or The Pokemon Company. It is built by fans, for fun.
